Meet Shauni

I’m Shauni Cunningham, a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) through the Association of Applied Sport Psychologists (AASP). I work with athletes from youth through adult, across all sports, on the mental side of performance. That might mean building focus under pressure, or steadying confidence on a day nothing’s going right. It might mean helping someone get back on track after a mistake, or figuring out what’s actually behind a slump. My approach pulls together sport psychology, education, and general wellbeing into one holistic view, because what’s happening for an athlete outside training usually shows up inside it too.

I hold a Master’s in Sport and Performance Psychology. My graduate research looked at what actually supports student-athletes’ wellbeing and motivation, and that work still shapes how I think about performance today.

Before this, I worked as a well-being coordinator and teacher in a school setting, supporting students’ mental health day to day. I’ve also worked pitch-side and court-side, with the Ipswich Town Football Club Academy and the Genesis Health Clubs Tennis Academy. There, I built curriculums, ran group workshops and individual sessions, and spent a lot of time simply observing athletes to understand what they actually needed.

I also spent a month in the mountains in India completing a yoga teacher training, partly to deepen my own practice and partly to push past my comfort zone. That background, along with an ongoing Pilates practice, means I bring mindfulness and body awareness into sessions, not just conversation. What’s happening in someone’s body under pressure is part of the picture, not separate from it.

I take a client-centered approach: sessions are built around what each athlete actually needs, not a fixed program. A lot of that starts with strengths. We figure out what’s already working for someone, then look at how to use it in more situations, on and off the field. It’s a more reliable starting point than working down a list of weaknesses.
